Current Concepts in Manual Therapy for Upper
Quarter Musculoskeletal Conditions

Registration deadline is 4/6/18. There will be a $50 late fee for registrations received after April 6th. There is a limit of 40 participants.

The course is worth 16 contact hours. For ND licensees, the course counts for 16 certified units.

The course will be held at the University of Jamestown PT Program located at 4190 26th Avenue South, Fargo. Lab clothes are required.

Course Description

This hands-on, two-day lecture/lab course will present the current evidence on upper quarter examination, evaluation and manual therapy techniques, including manipulation. The majority of the class will be focused on hands-on demonstration and practice of non-thrust and thrust joint manipulation techniques.

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Apply a clinical reasoning based upper quarter screening process on each patient to determine appropriateness for physical therapy.
  • Define safety related to the use of orthopedic manual physical therapy to include: red flags, contraindications/ precautions, side effects/risk factors.
  • Determine an appropriate physical therapy diagnosis through clinical reasoning to guide physical therapy intervention.
  • Given case scenarios, determine appropriate evidence informed manual therapy interventions.
  • Utilize clinical reasoning and incorporate current evidence to determine the appropriateness of manual intervention and incorporated exercise after manual intervention.
  • Perform upper extremity and cervicothoracic mobilizations/manipulations on an appropriately screened patient.

Course Faculty

Jodi Young is an Associate Professor of Physical Therapy at AT Still University in Mesa, Arizona. Jodi earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of North Dakota, is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist through the American Physical Therapy Association, and is also a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy. She is currently working on a PhD through the University of Newcastle in Australia where she is researching healthcare utilization and physical therapy dosing in patients with lower extremity injuries. Her primary teaching areas are in the musculoskeletal curriculum and differential diagnosis. Jodi has over 11 years of clinical experience in outpatient orthopedic settings, with a special interest in the spine. She has presented at national conferences in the area of manual therapy and has been published in several different peer-reviewed journals.
